The Knot Book of Wedding List

Getting ready to plan an engagement party? Sounds like a daunting task! But fear not, I’ve found a fabulous book that has everything you need to know about engagement planning, wedding planning and everything in between. Traditionally, the bride’s parents host the engagement party, but these days, the groom’s parents often throw their own shindig, or both sets of parents can host one joint celebration. There is also the option of having your Bridesmaids, Maid of Honor, Groomsmen or Best Man take control of the engagement party planning. Here are some basic guidelines to help give that party planning a good kickstart:

CHOOSE A DATE
Help your host by selecting at least three or four dates to choose from, ad do so within three months after the proposal.

PREPARE THE GUEST LIST
The rules of etiquette state everyone who’s invited to the engagement party should be invited to the wedding as well. But, if you are planning on just a small wedding, and yet still want to have extravagant engagement party with a huge guest list, more power to you. But it is important that you remember to let people know that the wedding will be small and intimate, so as not to hurt anyone’s feelings when they aren’t invited to the wedding. And, if you are worried that your guests will think this party’s purpose is only to receive gifts, just ask your hosts to add a polite note in the invitation that mentions nor presents or gifts are to be brought.

REGISTER FOR GIFTS
This is the fun part! By registering for some items, it helps to give the guests an idea of what style best fits you!

GET A TOAST OR SPEECH READY
We aren’t talking a fancy schmancy Shakespearean monologue here, but just know that it is appropriate for you to raise a glass to your hosts and guests, and thank them all for coming to your engagement party.

TRACK ALL THE GIFTS
Enlist your Maid of Honor or a Bridesmaid to help you create a guest list spreadsheet so that you can keep track of who gave what. This will be a life saver when you go to send out those thank you cards!

These ideas are all from The Knot Book of Wedding Lists, published by Clarkson Potter/Publishers.
